What happens in sex therapy?

How I work

At the first appointment, we will discuss what is going on for you. Here I will gather some personal information. Together we will determine what your goals and outcomes are. At times people have more than one issue, and that’s ok, these cannot all be dealt with in one session. Therapy is an ongoing process, and we can tackle these one at a time. Depending on the issues presented I will enlist other allied health professionals to help with the treatment process. Part of my job is as an educator, so, some homework will be required between sessions. These may be in the form of reading or educational videos. Homework is an important part of therapy. This is where you can practice new skills and strategies to improve and assist in developing new helpful habits to enhance intimacy and your sex life (however that looks for you). Further sessions will explore difficulties experienced with homework or misunderstandings. Therapy helps the individual, or couple explore and become skilled in the way they think and behave in relationships. It is designed to teach a more satisfying sexual interaction with a partner. Sex therapists see people of all ages, sexual orientations, gender, religions, and ethnicity. Partnered or not.

How can it help?

Sex therapists are specifically trained to help individuals experiencing sexual difficulties. When it comes to sexual concerns then this health professional should be your first choice. Even if sexuality seems to be a part of the issue. Sex therapists come from many different backgrounds; this includes. Nursing, psychologists, doctors, counsellors, psychotherapists, psychiatrists, occupational therapists, social workers, and physiotherapists. Each therapist has a wealth of knowledge due to their background and areas of experience. Treatments from each platform may have differing results. Sex therapy can also assist couples who already have a satisfying sex life by enhancing communication about sex and love by discovering more ways to pleasure each other. How long does therapy take? Depending on contributing factors it can take anywhere from 6-8 sessions. At times all it takes is one, however, it can take as long as you need. Results are individual. Many aspects of sex therapy can require patience and perseverance; however, rewards are long-term benefits.

Can I see a therapist on my own?

Yes, you can. If you prefer to receive confidential help and advice on your own, then I can most certainly help. Having some knowledge and being able to make some personal changes certainly will help transform your relationship dynamic. However, sex therapy can be remarkably beneficial when both partners are involved and devoted to the process. If a partner doesn’t want to come then this can be discussed during sessions to assess the benefits of their attending and how we can encourage them to see the benefits. When a partner comes, I will initially do separate sessions, at least once.
